The route in a nutshell
This ambitious hike directly links La Datcha du Parc to Lac des Perches (984 m), one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the Vosges massif. The route first crosses the valley to the authentic village of Storckensohn, then climbs progressively towards the Gazon Vert ridge before reaching the pass and the lake, set in a wild glacial cirque.
The elevation gain, length and steep forest sections make it a demanding outing, reserved for well-equipped and fit hikers. The reward: high pastures, an old farm-inn, a discreet waterfall and a lake with emerald reflections.
The main stages
La Datcha du Parc
Starting point in front of La Datcha, 31 Rue du Parc. Head out of the village along the main road towards Storckensohn.
Storckensohn
Crossing the hamlet via the rue du Gazon Vert. This charming village preserves its oil mill and rural character.
The waterfall and forest climb
Gradual climb through a beautiful forest of beech and fir trees, marked by Club Vosgien signposts. A waterfall may be seen along the way (often dry in summer).
Gazon Vert Farm-Inn
Exit onto the high pastures. The Gazon Vert farm-inn offers a gourmet stop (tarte flambée, marcaire meals). Wide view over the Thur Valley.
Col des Perches
Highest point of the route. Junction with the GR5 (red rectangle).
Lac des Perches (Sternsee)
Short descent via the GR5 to the lake, nestled in a glacial cirque at the foot of the Rouge Gazon. Emerald reflections, silence, wildlife. Return via the same route.
Recommended gear
- Sturdy high-top hiking boots
- 15-25 L backpack with plenty of water (2 L minimum)
- Fleece and waterproof jacket (changeable weather at altitude)
- Cap, sunglasses, sunscreen in summer
- Hiking poles (recommended for the descent)
- Bars, dried fruit, picnic
Good to know
This hike is feasible from May to October. In winter and spring, caution: snow and ice make the upper section dangerous (snowshoes and winter equipment required). Check the weather before leaving — late afternoon storms are frequent in summer on the ridges.
The upper section can be done directly starting from Storckensohn (reference Decathlon Outdoor route: 9.6 km, +540 m) if you prefer a shortened version by leaving the car in the village.
Reference track: this hike is based on the “De Storckensohn au Col des Perches” route with an extension from La Datcha.
